In the Language of Remembering Aanchal Malhotra PDF Download. Remnants of a Separation, Aanchal Malhotra’s debut book, was published in 2017 to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of India’s Partition. It provided a human history of the historic event by exhuming stories hidden in commonplace artefacts that survivors had brought across the newly established border.
In the Language of Remembering Summary
It was praised for its innovative approach to a decades-old and well-discussed topic. But, more importantly, it sparked discussions inside families: between those who lived through Partition and others who had only heard about it.
As a natural progression, In the Language of Remembering explores that very idea, revealing how Partition is still not a thing of the past, and its legacy is woven into the daily lives of future generations.
It examines how Partition memory is preserved and bequeathed and how its consequences are disseminated and manifested within family, community, and nation by bringing together conversations recorded over many years with generations of Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and their respective diaspora.
The voices in this living collection, with the oldest respondents in their eighties and the youngest mere teenagers, personally and truthfully answer topics like Is Partition relevant? Should we continue to discuss it? Is it anything that defines our relationships? Does it, without our knowledge, shape our personalities or amplify our fears?
As the subcontinent commemorates the seventy-fifth anniversary of Partition, In the Language of Remembering will serve as a stark reminder of the price this land paid for failing to prevent communal violence – and what could happen again if we choose division over inclusion again.
