These footsoldiers of Indian freedom tell their stories in The Last Heroes. Adivasis, Dalits, OBCs, Brahmins, Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus are among the men, women, and children featured in this book. They come from various parts of the country, speak various languages, and include atheists and believers, Leftists, Gandhians, and Ambedkarites.
The individuals featured pose an intriguing question: What is freedom? They saw it as going beyond the scope of Independence. And almost all of them persisted in their fight for liberty long after 1947. Post-1947 generations require their stories.
