All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days Pdf

The incredible life and brutal death of Mildred Harnack, the American head of one of the largest underground resistance groups in Germany during WWII—“a magnificent literary achievement”—is chronicled in this “highly evocative, deeply moving” real narrative (Kai Bird, author of The Outlier and co-author of Pulitzer Prize-winning American Prometheus)

All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days Pdf Summary

Mildred Harnack, a Milwaukee native, was twenty-six years old when she enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Germany and experienced the Nazi party’s rapid rise. She began hosting secret meetings in her apartment in 1932 with a small group of political activists, which grew into Berlin’s largest underground resistance organization by 1940. She enlisted the support of working-class Germans in the resistance, assisted Jews in escaping, coordinated acts of sabotage, and worked on the creation of anti-Hitler leaflets. Her accomplices snuck the pamphlets into mailboxes, public restrooms, and phone booths while it was still dark in Berlin.

She became a spy when the first bullets of WWII were fired, couriering top-secret intelligence to the Allies. The Gestapo ambushed her on the eve of her escape to Sweden. A panel of five Nazi military judges condemned her to six years in a concentration camp, but Hitler overturned the ruling and ordered her execution. She was beheaded on February 16, 1943, after being fastened to a guillotine.

Mildred Harnack was the lone American in the German resistance’s leadership, according to historians, but her fascinating narrative has remained practically unheard until today.

Rebecca Donner, Harnack’s great-great-niece, based this remarkable piece of narrative nonfiction on her extensive archival research in Germany, Russia, England, and the United States, as well as recently discovered documents in her family collection.

Donner brilliantly interweaves letters, diary entries, notes smuggled out of a Berlin prison, survivors’ testimony, and a trove of declassified intelligence documents into a powerful, epic story, reconstructing the moral courage of an enigmatic woman nearly erased by history, fusing elements of biography, a real-life political thriller, and scholarly detective story.
