In the early 1970s, Eleanor and Cam meet at a Vermont crafts fair. He produces wooden bowls and she is an artist and writer. They had three children in four years, two daughters and a red-headed son who carries rocks in his pockets plays the violin, and prays to God.
Eleanor loves everything about their New Hampshire farm: summer nights spent watching Cam’s softball games, snow days spent by the fire, and the annual tradition of crafting paper boats and cork people to launch in the brook every spring. Eleanor and Cam have something more important than making love, even if they don’t make it as often as they used to.
Count the Ways A Novel Written By Joyce Maynard Summary
Then there’s a horrible accident caused by Cam’s carelessness. Eleanor is overwhelmed by bitterness, losing herself in her life as a mother because she is unable to forgive him, while Cam finds peace with a new young companion.
Throughout the decades that follow, the five members of this fragmented family make unexpected discoveries and actions that occasionally bring them together and, more often than not, tear them apart. Joyce Maynard portrays a family compelled to confront important, painful truths of its past, and find redemption in its darkest hours, by tracing the path of their lives—from one child’s gender change to another’s choice to utterly separate with her mother.
Count the Ways is an achingly beautiful, tragic, and truly compassionate novel of home, parenthood, love, and forgiveness about clinging on and learning to let go.
