Fairy Tales in English Summary
Charlie Reade appears to be a typical high school student, good at baseball and football and a good student. He does, however, carry a big load. When he was ten years old, his mother was killed in a hit-and-run accident, and his father’s grief pushed him to drink.
Charlie learned to look after himself and his father. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and his aged master, Howard Bowditch, a hermit who lives in a large mansion on top of a hill with a closed shed in the backyard. It makes odd noises on occasion.
Charlie begins working for Mr. Bowditch and falls in love with Radar. When Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape on which he tells a story that no one believes. In Fairy Tale, King’s storytelling shines.
This is a great and horrifying story set in a world other than our own, in which good must face overpowering evil, and a brave boy and his dog must lead the charge.
“What could you write that would make you happy?” King wondered early in the Pandemic.”I imagined a big empty city deserted but alive as if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be addressed,” I observed the deserted streets, ghostly buildings, and a gargoyle head lying in the street toppled.
I saw smashed sculptures (of what I didn’t know at the time but later discovered). I saw a massive, sweeping palace with glass towers that pierced the clouds at their tops. I witnessed a magical sundial that could tell the future.
