Washington Post Afghanistan Papers Pdf

Craig Whitlock, a Washington Post reporter, and three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, tells the ground-breaking account of how three presidents and their military commanders mislead the public year after year about America’s longest war, foreshadowing the Taliban’s recapture of Afghanistan.

Unlike the conflicts in Vietnam and Iraq, the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 received near-universal support from the population. At initially, the objectives were simple and straightforward: defeat al-Qaeda and prevent a repeat of 9/11. However, soon after the US and its allies overthrew the Taliban, the mission went off track, and US authorities lost sight of their initial goals.

Distracted by the Iraq war, the US military became embroiled in an unwinnable guerilla fight in a country it didn’t comprehend. But, especially in a war that began as a good cause, no president wanted to accept defeat. Instead, the Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations committed more soldiers to Afghanistan and claimed to be making progress, despite the fact that they all understood there was no realistic chance of a complete triumph.

The Afghanistan Papers features surprising revelation after startling revelation from persons who played a direct part in the war, from leaders in the White House and the Pentagon to soldiers and relief workers on the front lines, just as the Pentagon Papers transformed the public’s view of Vietnam.

They concede, bluntly, that the US government’s plans were a shambles, that the nation-building endeavor was a massive failure, and that drugs and corruption had enslaved their Afghan government’s partners. Overall, the report is based on over 1,000 interviews with those who knew the US government was presenting a skewed, and often fully manufactured, version of events.
