Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3: The Complete Story

The Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3 had only been on the market for a few weeks when the Honda 750 came along, making it hard for them to stay afloat. The supposed advantages of manoeuvrability were nullified by handling issues, acceleration, and top speed.

At this point, Triumph was no longer manufacturing motorcycle parts or cycles but remained active as a brand for the bike manufacturer John Player & Sons, who released the Triumph Tiger 160 aimed at markets with strict power limits.

The British bikes might be fast, but no one loves their oddball styling. Production for Triumphs and BSA was suspended for eight months in ’71. To fight back, the factory launched a race team that swept all before it, including a 1?2?3 at the Daytona 200.

The battle doesn’t last long, though; while BSA collapses, Triumph struggles on to launch the T150 Trident and update it with a 5-speed gearbox and front disc brake.

This story is like something out of Hollywood.

As the result of a small factory disaster, trident production finally stopped. Even though new bikes were being launched, trident production was in vain, and its production stopped in 1975.

But, as it turns out, the plot only thickens. When two engine specialists, Les Williams and Norman Hyde, decide to capitalize on the success of the Trident, they evolve the three-cylinder triples by modifying frames.

They formed a club called Trident and Rocket 3 Owners’ Club that succeeded in carrying this iconic vehicle into the 1980s. In 1992 (again in 2020), Triumph re-launches its line of motorcycles bearing the name “Triumph Trident”.
