Garcia became interested in autism after becoming dissatisfied with the media’s portrayal of the illness, particularly the idea that it is caused by vaccines and the restricted portrayals of autistic individuals as white guys working in Silicon Valley. His own experience as an autistic person was nothing like that. He is Latino, a University of North Carolina graduate, and works as a journalist in Washington, D.C., covering politics. Garcia recognized he needed to write down what so many autistic individuals have been saying for years: autism is a part of who they are, and they don’t need to be repaired.

Garcia uses his own life as a springboard in We’re Not Broken to discuss the social and policy gaps that exist in supporting those on the spectrum. He investigates how autistic people deal with systems that were not designed with them in mind, from education to healthcare. Simultaneously, he shares the experiences of all types of autistic people, from those with higher support needs to autistic people of color and LGBTQ people. By doing so, Garcia provides his community with a platform to articulate their own needs, rather than relying on others to do so, as has been the norm for far too long.

ERIC GARCIA is a Washington, D.C.-based journalist. He was previously an assistant editor at the Washington Post’s Outlook column, an associate editor at The Hill, and a correspondent for National Journal, MarketWatch, and Roll Call. He’s also contributed to the Daily Beast, the New Republic, and Salon.com, among other publications. Garcia attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
