Following the pandemic-shortened baseball season of 2020, Leitner announced his retirement from broadcasting and was named Ambassador of the San Diego Padres by team owner and chairman Peter Seidler.

Leitner also worked for CBS 8 for 25 years (1978-2002) as a sports anchor and commentator, as well as KFMB-AM Radio as a talk-show presenter and sports humorist.
