Mani Shankar Aiyar received his education at Welham, Doon, St. Stephen’s, and Cambridge. He then joined the Indian Foreign Service after a short period of involvement with the Intelligence Bureau.
Over a span of twenty-six years, he held various positions abroad, including in cities like Brussels, Hanoi, Baghdad, and Karachi. During this time, he worked alongside ambassadors who ranged from exceptional mentors to difficult individuals. He also had two assignments at the Headquarters, spanning across three different ministries.
In 1985, Rajiv Gandhi invited him to join the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). After four years, Aiyar transitioned from his role there into the realm of politics and Parliament. His areas of particular interest include Panchayati Raj (local self-governance) and Pakistan.
